“Trash burner”, “garbage burner” and “incinerator” are often used as if they mean the same thing. They don’t. A burn barrel or simple trash burner is an open or semi-open fire. An incinerator is a controlled combustion system. The difference shows up in smoke, smell, ash – and in whether you are allowed to use it.
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Burn barrel / simple trash burner | Dual-chamber incinerator | |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature | Low and uneven, often smouldering | Controlled, with secondary chamber at 850°C+ |
| Smoke | Visible smoke and smell | No visible smoke in normal operation |
| Air supply | Uncontrolled | Blower and dampers |
| Gas residence time | None | Around 2 seconds at high temperature |
| Ash | Half-burned waste | Small, fully burned ash |
| Legality | Restricted or banned in many areas | Permitted with appropriate approval |
| Typical user | Individual households | Farms, camps, hospitals, villages, factories |
Why Burn Barrels Smoke
Smoke is unburned carbon and tar. A barrel fire never gets hot enough, long enough, with enough mixed air to burn the gases completely. Plastics in a low-temperature fire also release harmful compounds, including dioxins. See why incinerators produce black smoke – the same causes apply.

What Makes an Incinerator Different
- Primary chamber – waste is dried and gasified with burner support.
- Secondary chamber – gases are burned at high temperature with extra air.
- Chimney – disperses clean flue gas above people and buildings.
- Controls – temperature monitoring and burner control.

When to Upgrade
Consider a proper incinerator when:
- Your site produces more than a few bags of waste per day
- Neighbours or staff complain about smoke
- Regulations prohibit open burning
- You handle medical, animal or mixed commercial waste
Our garbage incinerators start at 20–30 kg/h – see garbage incinerators and incinerator for home.

FAQ
Is a trash burner the same as an incinerator?
No. A trash burner or burn barrel is an uncontrolled fire. An incinerator has controlled air, burners and a secondary chamber that burns the smoke.
Are burn barrels legal?
Many areas restrict or ban open burning of household waste. Check local rules.
Why does my garbage burner smoke so much?
Low temperature, uncontrolled air and no secondary combustion zone mean gases leave unburned.
What is the smallest incinerator you sell?
Our smallest garbage model, the SMWI-20, handles about 20–30 kg/h.
